Abstract
This paper aims to reveal that the methods of understanding music by Schopenhauer, Wagner, and Nietzsche exist in a complementary relationship, focusing on their interpretations of opera. According to Schopenhauer, will is the cause of suffering, and through music, humans can transcend the painful world brought about by will and attain inner peace. Wagner accepted this and directly demonstrated through his operas what that eternal liberation from the painful world entails. Nietzsche, in turn, discovered that such transcendent experiences in Wagner's operas actually arouse a powerful inner impulse to overcome the world's suffering. However, for Schopenhauer, such transcendent experiences of the will can only be expected from absolute music, and music provides mental and physical stability by allowing us to escape from the world for a moment and understand the principles of the world. However, I would like to interpret the positions of these three music philosophers as illuminating the essence and function of music from different perspectives. Using Wagner's Tristan and Isolde as an example, I will examine how Wagner, as the composer, was able to express the experience of liberation from suffering through melody. Then, from the perspective of Nietzsche, who is the listener, I will attempt to explain how the desire to live is strengthened through music. Meanwhile, given Schopenhauer's high praise for Rossini's music, this study will analyze a portion of the score of Rossini's The Barber of Seville from the perspectives of both composer and listener. Through this analysis, the study will seek to concretize the characteristics of music that heal the mind and body.
