Abstract

This paper explores the therapeutic potential of music, starting with Schopenhauer's theory of music. According to him, the will is the cause of suffering in the world, and music transcends the world as represented by the will, leading us to a state of painlessness. Interestingly, this can be accomplished through instrumental music, which has no theme or lyrics, just melodies. For example, contemporary Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) treats the mind through purely instrumental music, viewing the musical experience as an experience of essence or an experience of transcendence, as described by Schopenhauer. To accurately diagnose clients’ problems, GIM asks them to express their music-induced images in words and pictures. However, this ignores the specificity of music. This is because, according to Schopenhauer, musical emotions cannot be described conceptually. In this regard, the modern cognitive music aesthetician, P. Kivy, argues that Schopenhauer's experience of the will through music is unclear, and that humans with complex, higher-order thinking are able to conceptualize how they feel while listening to music. GIM founder H. Bonny summarizes music's therapeutic qualities as relaxation and concentration. Music relaxes the mind and body, allowing expression of previously repressed emotions, and the multi-layered melodies of instrumental music, in particular, focus the mind to visualize complex emotions that the clients may not be consciously aware of. However, GIM still relies on a music therapist. This is because the therapist takes the lead in selecting music and making diagnoses. Therefore, future research is needed on how to visualize music for self-healing.
