Abstract

From the moment Nietzsche met Wagner, Nietzsche’s philosophy was heavily shadowed by Wagner. Although he tried to become independent from Wagner, Nietzsche did not break free from the intellectual constraints of Wagner. This is confirmed through Nietzsche’s last book “Nietzsche contra Wagner”, and the sentence ‘I am your truth’ which was left at the end of the book. This has a meaning to the extent that the hidden aspects of ‘you (Wagner)’ is fully revealed through ‘I (Nietzsche)’. It is an excessive and one-sided argument. This expression shows only half the understanding of the Nietzsche-Wagner relationship. Because your truth is revealed through me, but conversely, my truth is also revealed through you. In essence, ‘contra’ refers to a mutual relationship, not a one-sided. In this paper, we try to re-examine the relationship between Wagner’s music and Nietzsche’s philosophy. On the assumption that you are my truth as much as I am your truth, I want to summarize Nietzsche’s criticism of Wagner, while at the same time clarify how deeply Wagner’s music is tuning Nietzsche’s philosophy. Of course, the methodology of this study will not be a hermeneutics that seeks the author’s intentions, but a hermeneutics that reconstructs it deconstructively. In other words, instead of interpreting Nietzsche’s criticism of Wagner literally, it will show a process in which the target of criticism is directed toward Nietzsche himself by the echo of Wagner’s music. In this way, we will discover a new aspect of Nietzsche’s philosophy through Wagner’s music. But we will not reduce Nietzsche’s philosophy to Wagner’s, because the true meaning of contra is belonging-together(Zusammengehörigkeit). Belonging-together refers to a relationship that is firmly bound through difference and confrontation. Nietzsche and Wagner, and their belonging-together deepen through the making differences. The fact that the core difference between the two is the source of the power that binds them also means that the difference points to the lack of each other. This paper intends to present Nietzsche’s freedom and Wagner’s love as differences. Nietzsche wanted to overcome Wagner’s love with his freedom concept, and Wagner wanted to overcome Nietzsche’s freedom with his love concept. However, both their freedom and love are within the basic framework of Western culture called melancholy. The melancholic difference is the veiled essence of this contra.
