An Analysis of Performance in Korean-into-English Simultaneous Interpretation

본 논문에서는 한-영 동시통역의 내용분석을 다루었다. 통역의 자료는 두 그룹의 통역사, 즉 5-7년의 경력을 가진 회의통역사(PI)와 통역대학원을 수료한 초보통역사(NI) 통역의 실기자료에서 오류를 비교하였다. 언어는 일반적으로 통사론 및 형태론적 특성을 토대로 그 유형이 분류된다. 일반적으로, 한국어의 경우 문장이 화제(topic)와 평언(comment)의 구조로 이루어진 언어이며, 영어는 주어(subject)와 동사(verb)의 구조로 이루어진 언어로 분류한다. 본고에서는 Yom(1993)이 제시한 한국어의 문장유형(sentential pattern)중에서 단일화제(Single Topic), 부사어귀(Adverbial), 내포문(Embedded)을 분석하였으며, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 예상했던 바와 같이, 앞서 제시한 세 범주에서 경력자의 통역수행 능력이 초심자에 비해 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 특히 내포문의 경우에는 문장이 상대적으로 길고 동사가 문미(sentence end)에 위치하여 통역이 잠시 지연되는 현상이 나타나고 두 그룹이 공통적으로 높은 오류의 빈도를 나타냈다. 이러한 한국어의 특성을 고려하여 동시통역, 특히 한영동시통역의 경우, 단일화제 범주의 문장형태에서 단계적으로 출발하여, 궁극적으로는 내포문 범주의 문장형태로 발전하는 방법이 바람직하다고 사료된다.
