Abstract
To improve the effectiveness of online pricing for small start-ups, this study investigated the interaction between payment framing(partitioned vs. combined pricing) and consumption goals (utilitarian vs. hedonic) on consumers’ service evaluations. We tested congruence effect between price framing and consumption goals, and the results from two experiments showed that consumers with a utilitarian goal show higher service evaluation when partitioned pricing was implemented than combined pricing was. On the other hand, consumers with a hedonic consumption goal showed higher service evaluation when combined pricing was used than partitioned pricing was. In addition, additional analysis demonstrated that processing fluency mediated the moderating effect of consumption goals on service evaluations.
