This article examines the disappearance of “Africa Street,” a once-thriving African migrant business enclave in Itaewon, Seoul. The study identifies three interrelated displacement processes: indirect economic displacement, driven by soaring rents and “price shadowing”; community displacement, through shifts in neighborhood identity and governance that marginalized African proprietors; and neighborhood resource displacement, marked by the erosion of services and networks for the African community. These findings extend Davidson’s (2008) displacement framework, showing gentrification operates through cumulative, subtle mechanisms rather than direct eviction. Drawing on archival analysis, fieldwork, and interviews, the study demonstrates that Africa Street’s decline was not the result of a single dramatic event but the cumulative effect of economic pressures, urban policy shifts, and social dynamics that gradually unraveled the enclave, illustrating forms of displacement that extend beyond the physical relocation of a marginalized migrant community.
