공간을 이해하고 재현하는 방식은 종종 정치적이다. 그러나 지금까지 수도에 대한 연구는 주로 도시 기능의 차원에서 접근하여 공간정치로서의 수도의 의미와 역할에 대해서는 다소 간과해왔다. 한 국가의 통치의 관점에서 보면, 수도는 국민의 의사와 의지를 집합하는 공간이고, 특정한 이념을 바탕으로 한 국민의 통합을 지향한다. 따라서 수도의 상징정치의 의미를 파악하기 위해서는 공간과 주체, 권력의 상호작용의 측면에서 권력구조의 재배치와 국민적 통합을 추구하는 방식을 살펴보고 다양한 정치적인 것들이 어떻게 이러한 정치에 의해 포섭되거나 혹은 저항하는지를 이해할 필요가 있다. 이런 점에서 이 연구에서 주목하는 것은 현대 중국의 베이징 수도 건설 과정이다. 수도는 國旗나 國歌와 마찬가지로 한 국가를 대표하는 표상의 하나이자 한 공동체가 지닌 기념자산의 상징적 요소들, 즉 국민적 기억이 구현되어 있는 장소이기도 하다. 그런 의미에서 수도 베이징은 피에르 노라(Pierre Nora)가 말하는 ‘기억의 장소’에 해당한다. 근대 이전 거의 8세기에 걸쳐 제국의 수도였던 베이징은 근대 이후 새롭게 상징정치의 중심으로 부상한 도시와는 달리, 민족 공동체로서의 집단적 기억과 현대 새롭게 부여된 상징적 이념에 대한 기억이 동시에 작동하는 공간으로서 과거와 현재를 연결하는 역사를 응축하고 있는 실재적 장소이다. 이 두 기억은 통치이념의 변주에 따라 경쟁, 갈등과 협력 사이에서 긴장관계를 이루고 있다. 이를 파악하기 위해서는 사회주의 국가의 수도로서 베이징의 공간을 재구성하는 과정에서 전통적 기억이 어떤 방식으로 소환되고 변환되는지, 그 위에 사회주의 기억이 어떻게 덧씌워지는지를 살펴봐야 한다.
Abstract
The way we understand and represent space is often political. Until now, research on the capital has mainly been approached from the perspective of urban functions, and has somewhat overlooked the meaning and role of the capital as a politics of space. In order to understand the meaning of the symbolic politics of the capital, it is necessary to look at the method of relocating the power structure and seeking national unity in terms of the interaction of space, subject, and power, and to understand how various political things are subsumed or resisted by such politics. In this regard, the focus of this study is on the construction process of the capital Beijing in the modern China. Like the national anthem or national flag, the capital is one of the representations of a country and a place where the symbolic elements of the commemorative assets of a community, that is, the national memory, are embodied. In that sense, the capital Beijing corresponds to what Pierre Nora calls a ‘place of memory’. Beijing, which was the capital of the empire for nearly 8 centuries before the modern era, is different from a city that has emerged as a new center of symbolic politics since modern times. capital Beijing is a space where the collective memory of the national community and the memory of the modern symbolic ideology work simultaneously. It is a real place condensing history that connects the past and the present. These two memories form a tense relationship between competition, conflict and cooperation according to variations in the ideology of government. In order to understand this relationship, it is necessary to examine how traditional memories are recalled and transformed in the process of reconstructing the space of Beijing as the capital of a socialist country, and how socialist memories are overlaid on them.
