Abstract
Beijing is the capital and the national center of politics, economy, society, culture, and education of China. It borders Hebei Province and Tianjin Municipality, and becomes the main axis of China capital region and the great international metropolitan city globally. In reverse, it recently became the symbol of regulation on an excessive urban expansion. The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics in urbanization process, urban system, urban spatial structure, and landscape by zones of Beijing. The urbanization rate of Beijing in 2017 had entered into the terminal stage of 86.5%. The urban systems are divided into four zones such as mono-centric city, inner suburban, outer suburban, and rural county. The internal structure of the city is characterized as differential land uses made by seven ring roads and four radial axis roads according to the accessibility from the city core. As such results, Beijing has a unique pattern of mosaic in terms of urban function and building landscape. This study will be a theoretical foundation to understand the unique urban spatial structure of Beijing.
