본 연구는 조지 발란신의 초기 안무작을 중심으로 작품에 나타난 미래주의의 영향에 관해 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구에서 그의 <나이팅게일의 노래>(1925) 와 <암고양이>(1927)의 내용 및 안무, 무대미술의 분석을 통해 미래주의의 기계적 역동성, 속도, 실험성의 미학이 어떻게 나타나는지 검토하였다. 이 작품들은 기계 모티브와 함께 기계의 분절적 움직임과 다이내미즘의 재현, 기계적 동역학의 안무 요소로의 도입, 기하학적 무대 디자인과 무용수의 움직임의 결합을 통한 확장된 역동성의구현, 산업 소재의 사용 등과 같은 미래주의의 특징을 나타낸다. 이는 초기 미래주의의 기계에 대한 재현에서 발전된 형태로서, 신체와 무대가 기계 요소를 통합적으로반영함을 보여준다. 결론적으로 발란신의 초기 작품들에서 그의 특징적인 고전발레와의 절충에 나타난 운동성의 강조, 간결성과 기하학적 속성에 관한 안무적 실험이미래주의의 영향 아래 이미 이루어지고 있었다는 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of Futurism on George Balanchine’s early works. This study shows how the aesthetics of futurism including mechanic dynamism, speed, and experimentation ap- pear in his works Le Chant du Rossignol(1925) and La Chatte(1927) through analysis of their contents, choreographic features and stage designs. Their futuristic aspects encompass the motif of machine, the re- production of articulating movement and dynamism from machine, the adaptation of mechanical dynamics as a choreographic element, the ex- pansion of dynamics through combining geometric set design and danc- ers’ movements, and the use of industrial materials, which designates an advanced form evolved from the early futurism’s representation of ma- chines to the integrated way dealing body and stage with machine. In conclusion, it can be said that Balanchine’s choreographic experiments re- garding his characteristic emphasis on athleticism in combination with classical ballet and simplicity and geometric properties had already been found in his early works, under the influence of futurism.
