Abstract

This study compares Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid with John Neumeier’s ballet adaptation to examine how the same narrative is re- imagined through different artistic media. The analysis focuses on four key as- pects: narrative structure, character interpretation, thematic transformation, and stage expression. Andersen’s tale presents a linear storyline emphasizing self-sacrifice and spiritual redemption, while Neumeier’s ballet offers a frag- mented, emotionally charged narrative that introduces the Poet as a symbolic reflection of the artist’s inner world. This reinterpretation shifts the focus from moral lessons to themes of artistic solitude, emotional struggle, and existential reflection. Through choreography, music, costume, and lighting, the ballet ex- ternalizes the characters’ psychological states and transforms the original fairy-tale atmosphere into a symbolic and modern tragedy. The findings high- light how classical stories can acquire new artistic and emotional depth when adapted through contemporary ballet, bridging historical context with modern sensibilities. This research contributes to the understanding of narrative adap- tation in dance and demonstrates the potential of ballet as a medium for re- interpretation beyond traditional storytelling.
