초록
This study is among the first to estimate how individuals use new information while they are making policy judgments. Taking dual-process models and processing-tracing methodology, I examined information processing through which white citizens make policy judgments on affirmative action programs. Using experimental data (N = 302), I found that individuals vary in their motivation and ability to care to incoming information. I also found that individuals do not prefer partisan information to factual information when they are being exposed to both types of information. I account for the variations in the use of new information and types of information that individuals favor in terms of prior knowledge about and interest in the issue at hand.
Abstract
This study is among the first to estimate how individuals use new information while they are making policy judgments. Taking dual-process models and processing-tracing methodology, I examined information processing through which white citizens make policy judgments on affirmative action programs. Using experimental data (N = 302), I found that individuals vary in their motivation and ability to care to incoming information. I also found that individuals do not prefer partisan information to factual information when they are being exposed to both types of information. I account for the variations in the use of new information and types of information that individuals favor in terms of prior knowledge about and interest in the issue at hand.
