(The War of the League of Cambrai), 디우 해전(The Battle of Diu), 아냐델로 전투(The Battle of Agnadello)를 겪은 격변기였다.

Abstract

This paper analyzes two portraits of Leonardo Loredan (1436-1521), the 75th doge of the Republic of Venice. One is a three-quarter portrait painted by Giovanni Bellini (1430-1516) in 1501 and the other is a profile portrait painted in 1501-5 by Vittore Carpaccio (1465-1520). During the reign of Loredan, the Republic of Venice was constantly involved in warfare, as can be seen in the battles of Cambrai, Diu, and Agnadello. The doge of Venice usually had a symbolic role, but Loredan held exceptional executive power. Previous studies of the portraits have dealt primarily with the posture and psychological expression of the doge. In order to shed light on the political aspect of the portraits, this paper focuses on the details of the setting against which the doge is represented. For example, in Bellini's portrait, the parapet makes the doge look like Christ. It reminds the viewer of the parapet in Bellini’s religious paintings, which symbolizes the altar and the sepulcher. In other words, it was used as a device to represent the divine authority of the doge. In Carpaccio’s portrait, the landscape seen through the open window in the background is notable. The influence of Flemish painting is evident in the realistic landscape. Occupying the center of the scene is the Castello area with the Arsenale di Venezia, which symbolically represents the Venetian Republic’s keen interest in defense industry. Considering Venice’s ambition to become a maritime empire since the thirteenth century, one might even go so far as to say that it is one of the symbols of Venetian collective identity. Set against this background, the two portraits of Loredan represent the image of the Emperor of Venice as the embodiment of heavenly authority and earthly power.
