Abstract
This paper examines some issues that Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) raised about the Genesis flood narrative in his drawing. The Royal Library at Windsor Castle houses the Deluge Drawings, a series of about ten drawings by Leonardo, probably executed during his last years. Very similar in composition and overall impression, these sheets show a spectacular landscape devoid of any creatures. It seems that Leonardo considered the ‘deluge’ to be an object of graphic exploration rather than a religious myth. Departing from a ‘literal’ interpretation of the Bible, he ultimately concentrated on exploring the methodological possibilities of a morphological approach. This study considers the implications of the Deluge Drawings through Leonardo’s writings and drawings of the apocalyptic vision and discusses the representation aspect of storm in the process of synthesizing observation and intuition in relation to the ‘generative’ function of the drawing.
