조선 전기에는 이곽파(李郭派) 화풍(畵風)으로 그려진 편파삼단구도(偏頗三段構圖)의 산수화가 유행하였다. 편파삼단구도는 화면의 한쪽, 즉 왼쪽 또는 오른쪽에 언덕, 바위, 산 등이 전경(前景), 중경(中景), 후경(後景)에 배치되어 세 개의 층위(層位)를 이루고 있는 화면 구성을 지칭한다. 후경에 용립(聳立)한 거대한 산들이 편파삼단구도의 산수화에 보이는 중요한 특징이다. 화면의 다른 쪽에는 강이 흐르고 있으며 후경에는 안개가 낀 장면이 보인다. 안평대군(安平大君) 이용(李瑢, 1418-1453)의 중국 회화 컬렉션에는 곽희(郭熙, 1001년경-1090년경)의 작품 17점이 포함되어 있다. 이 작품들은 곽희의 진작(眞作)은 아니며 대개 금대(金代), 원대(元代)에 이곽파 화풍으로 그려진 그림들로 생각된다. 안견(安堅, 15세기 중‧후반에 주로 활동)은 안평대군이 소장했던 이 작품들을 공부하여 이곽파 화풍에 정통하게 되었다. 안견의 <몽유도원도(夢遊桃源圖)>(1447년, 텐리대학부속텐리도서관(天理大學附屬天理圖書館 소장)는 그가 학습하고 자기화(自己化)한 이곽파 화풍, 특히 곽희 화풍이 어떤 것이었는지를 알려준다. 조선 초기에 수용된 이곽파 화풍은 16세기에 크게 유행하였다. 16세기에 제작된 편파삼단구도의 산수화는 대부분 이곽파 화풍으로 그려졌다. <산시청람도(山市晴嵐圖)>(리움미술관 소장), 전(傳) 양팽손(梁彭孫) 필(筆) <산수도(山水圖)>(국립중앙박물관 소장), <산시청람도(山市晴嵐圖)>(클리블랜드미술관 소장)는 이 시기에 그려진 편파삼단구도 산수화의 대표적인 작품들이다. 편파삼단구도의 산수화가 16세기에 유행했지만 이 구도의 연원(淵源)에 대해서는 현재 명확하게 알려진 것이 없다. 그런데 전경, 중경, 후경에 언덕, 바위, 솟아오른 산 등이 화면 한쪽에 배치되고 안개가 낀 경물(景物)이 화면의 다른 한쪽에 나타나는 구도는 금대 산수화에 보이고 있다. 현전하는 작품들이 드물어 금대 산수화의 전반적인 양상(樣相)과 구체적인성격(性格)을 파악하기는 매우 어려운 상황이다. 그러나 금대에 제작된 화면 한쪽에 무게를 둔 편파삼단구도의 <산촌도(山村圖)>(남경대학(南京大學) 소장)와 <계산행려도( 溪山行旅圖)>(샌프란시스코아시아미술박물관 소장)는 16세기에 제작된 조선시대 산수화와 구도 면에서 매우 유사해 주목된다. 이곽파 화풍으로 그려진 <산촌도>와 <계산행려도>는 16세기에 유행했던 편파삼단구도의 화면 구성을 보여주는 조선시대 산수화의 화풍적 연원이 금대 산수화에 있었음을 알려주고 있다.
Abstract
This essay explores how landscapes of the Jin dynasty (1115-1234) painted in the Li-Guo style played an important role in the development of early Joseon painting. The early years of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) saw the flourishing of landscape painting. The most influential landscapist of this time was An Gyeon (active mid and late 15th century). He studied Chinese masterpieces including 17 landscapes by Guo Xi (ca. 1001-ca. 1090) in Prince Anpyeong’s (Yi Yong, 1418-1453) collection. An Gyeon’s exposure to the Guo Xi tradition led to his creation of Dream Journey to the Peach Blossom Land, dated 1447, now in the Tenri University Library, in which steep mountains, misty gorges, and overhanging rocks appear, evoking the sense of monumentality and complexity that are characteristic of Guo Xi’s manner. The Li-Guo idiom, more specifically, the Guo Xi tradition, and An Gyeon’s style gained enormous popularity during the sixteenth century. The stylistic hallmarks of sixteenth-century Korean landscapes are the depiction of serpentine, multi-layered mountain peaks soaring from behind a veil of mist, the use of the one-corner composition, the rendering of the interpenetration of spatial elements, and the remarkable effect of spatial recession, and the representation of shimmering lights, fogs, and vapors and the cycle of seasons, as found in Mountain Market, Clear with Rising Mist in the Leeum Museum of Art, Landscape, attributed to Yang Paengson (1488-1545), in the National Museum of Korea, and Mountain Market, Clear with Rising Mist in the Cleveland Museum of Art. The one-corner composition with layered mountains, the craggy peaks and rocks, the expanse of water, and the spatial recession are characteristic of Jin landscapes such as Mountain Village in the collection of Nanjing University and Travelers among Valleys and Peaks in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco in which high boulders, a mist-filled valley, eroded banks, jagged cliffs, and a massive and twisting peak towering over the landscape are shown. This suggests that the stylistic characteristics of early Joseon paintings could have derived from those of Jin landscapes.
