Abstract
In the early Joseon period, landscape paintings in the Li-Guo manner or the An Gyeon (active mid-15th century) style are popular, paintings whose compositions are called “one corner,” that is asymmetrical, with huge boulders, rocky mountains, villages on one side while the rest of the silk or paper are left bare or shows an open river or various small landscape elements. Landscape attributed to Yang Paengson (1488-1545), now in the National Museum of Korea and Landscape, formerly in the Yu - gensai collection in Japan, are two of the most representative examples of the kind. Landscape, now in a private collection, shown to the public for the first time in 2016, bearing a striking resemblance to Early Spring by Guo Xi (c. 1001-1090), dated 1072, now in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, shows a centered or centerfocused composition, enabling us to rethink the compositional structures of the landscapes of the early Joseon period. Landscape in the British Museum also shows a centered composition. It is assumed that paintings, in composition, similar to Landscape in the British Museum, were produced in large numbers. Landscape attributed to Yi Jing (1581-?), currently in the National Museum of Korea, is one of the later paintings exactly following the composition and the depictions of landscape elements of Landscape in the British Museum.
