유아교육 실제에서의 다양한 가족의 반영과 유아교사가 인식하는 어려움 및 지원요구

본 연구는 유치원 교사와의 면담을 통하여 최근 급증하고 있는 다양한 가족을 유아교육 실제에서 어떻게 반영하고 있는지를 알아보고, 직면하고 있는 어려움 및 지원요구를 파악하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 연구 참여자는 수도권에 위치한 유치원에서 근무하는 유아교사 9명이었으며, 연구 방법으로는 질적 연구 방법의 하나인 면담을 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 유치원 교사들은 다양한 가족을 교육 실제에 반영함에 있어서 이상(인식)과 현실(실천)간에 차이를 나타내었다. 교사들이 인식하는 바람직한 실제는 교육과정 전반에 걸쳐 다양한 가족을 반영함으로써 유아들이 다양한 가족에 대해 부정적으로 인식하지 않고 차이를 인정하도록 도와야 한다는 것이었으나 실천에서는 대부분 생활주제 ‘가족과 이웃’에서 가족을 소개하는 한두 활동의 일부분으로만 다양한 가족을 반영하는 데 그치고 있었다. 둘째, 다양한 가족의 실제 반영에 있어서의 어려움과 지원요구에 대해 교사들은 다수를 위한 교육 내용을 선택해야 하는 중압감, 다양한 가족을 반영하는 활동과 자료의 부족, 활동 진행에서의 갈등으로 인해 어려움을 겪고 있었으며, 다양한 가족을 반영하는 구체적인 활동과 자료의 개발보급과 다양한 가족에 대한 교육적 지원이 필요하다고 요구하였다.
Abstract
This qualitative study sought to explore experiences of kindergarten teachers’ incorporation of family diversity into their curricula and their struggles that they faced in the process. Nine kindergarten teachers working in Seoul and Gyeong-Gi province were invited to participate in this study, and data were collected through in-depth interviews. The findings of this study were as follows. First, the kindergarten teachers showed the discrepancy between their ideal and actual practices as they incorporated the concept of diverse types of families. The teachers recognized that seamless integration of the concept of family diversity into the whole curriculum would help young children learn differences among various types of families without negative evaluation of them. However, in contrast, the teachers’ incorporation of the topics was limited to one or two family-related activities developed in relation to the curricula theme of ‘family and neighborhood.’ Second, major challenges that the teachers faced in incorporating the concept of family diversity in practice were (1) self-imposed pressure to choose educational contents geared to the majority student population, (2) the lack of activities and educational materials developed to teach the diverse types of families, and (3) the internal conflicts in the process of implementing family diversity-related activities. To address these challenges, the teachers indicated a need for (1) the development and provision of family diversity-related educational activities and materials and (2) educational support for diverse families.
