본 연구는 유아교사들이 인식하는 다문화 교육의 개념과 그 실천 형태 및 실천의 어려움에 대해 알아보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 연구 참여자는 서울, 경기, 대전 지역의 유치원에서 근무하며 다양한 문화적 배경을 지닌 유아들을 담임한 경험이 있는 유아교사 13명이며, 연구 방법으로는 면담을 실시하였다. 본 연구의 결과, 첫째, 유아교사들은 다문화 교육 개념에 대해 인종․민족․국가에 대한 교육, 고정관념과 편견 감소 및 탈피 교육, 소수 특정 집단에 대한 이해 및 지원 교육, 인간관계 강조 교육, 문화적 차이의 상호적 수용을 통한 미래 준비 교육으로 인식하고 있었다. 둘째, 교사들의 다문화 교육 실천은 유아들이 가지고 있는 ‘다름’에 대한 관심, 혼란, 이해와 인정의 형태로 나타났다. 셋째, 교사들이 다문화 교육을 실천하면서 겪는 어려움으로는 다문화 교육 개념의 불명확성, 문화적 다양성에 대한 지식 및 경험 부족, 교사 자신이 가지고 있는 편견 및 고정관념, 부모들의 ‘다름’에 대한 부정적인 편견․이기심․피해의식 등이 지적되었다.
Abstract
This study seeks to gain an understanding of Korean teachers’ perceptions of multicultural education in terms of what it is, how it is practiced, and what difficulties attend its implementation. Thirteen kindergarten teachers, with experience teaching young children from diverse cultural backgrounds in their own classrooms in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Daejun province, were invited to participate in this study. Data for the study were collected through in-depth interviews. The overall findings of this study are as follows. First, the teachers perceived multicultural education as (1) education about race, ethnicity, and nation, (2) education for reducing or eliminating stereotypes and prejudices, (3) education for understanding and supporting underrepresented minority groups, (4) education focusing on interpersonal and intergroup relationships, and (5) education for a future in which mutual acceptance of cultural differences will be necessary for peaceful coexistence. Second, putting multicultural education into practice in their own classrooms, the teachers were (1) taking an interest in the ‘differences’ that their students had, (2) confused about ‘differences’ that their students had, and (3) understanding and accepting of ‘differences’ that their students had. Finally, the difficulties that the teachers experienced in implementing multicultural education were (1) the obscurity of the concepts defining and encompassing multicultural education, (2) the teachers’ lack of knowledge and experience regarding diversity, (3) their own stereotypes and prejudices, and (4) the prejudices or narrow/closed mindedness exhibited by some parents and feeling of being victimized exhibited by others.
