Abstract

Using 2002 travel diary data, this study analyzes the effect of land use on automobile dependence of residents in Seoul. The probability of automobile use against either public transit or walking/cycling in work and non-work travel is modelled as a function of socioeconomic variables and spatial characteristics at both the origin and destination ends of travel. Numerous variables are used to represent spatial characteristics including local land use, transportation supply, and relative location in the metropolitan area. Analysis finds that compact and diverse land uses in and around origins and destinations of travel generally reduce automobile use, but their influences appear to be modest and inconclusive. On the other hand, there are a large number of socioeconomic variables such as household income that contribute to more automobile use. The results suggest that, as long as income and thus automobile ownership increase, new urbanism which purport to more compact, diverse, and non-motorized urban development may have limited effectiveness on reducing automobile dependence and improving air quality in Seoul. The results also suggest that continued research on this topic be necessary as the relationship varies across indicators of land use and travel used.
