Abstract

In a way to develop a sprawl index that considers the land use patterns of Seoul, this study firstly reviews the existing literature and finds that most studies integrated land use variables into a single index. his study operationalizes major land use characteristics using population density, land use balance, road intersection density, and transit facility density, and tests and partially rejects their correlations. Based on 2006 and 2012 land use data, the reliability of the single-index measurement is found to be acceptable, but regarding its validity, the measurement turns out to have a limitation in identifying sprawl hotspots. To a method that separately considers land use balance, the single-index measurement is about 85 percent identical in their overall results, but it erroneously identifies neighborhoods with low land use balance as high compact areas. By contrast, the two-dimensional indexing method, which separates land use balance from other land use variables, works effectively both in presenting the overall pattern of the sprawl and reveling its hot spots.
