온라인 PBL에서 학습자들의 문제해결 활동 특성 분석

초록

문제해결능력과 협동학습능력이 강조되고 있는 요즘 이러한 능력을 향상시킬 수 있는 교수 학습 환경의 하나로 PBL이 주목받고 있으며, 팀별로 이루어지는 PBL 활동이 원활히 이루어질 수 있도록 온라인 공간이 활용되고 있다. 그런데 이러한 온라인 PBL에 대한 연구는 그 과정보다는 PBL이 가져오는 여러 학습효과 등을 증명하는 등의 결과에 집중되어 있는데, 실제로 온라인 PBL을 실천하기 원하는 교수자 및 실천가들에게는 그 과정에서 학습자들이 어떻게 활동하는지에 대한 정보를 제시할 필요가 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 온라인 PBL로 진행된 강좌에서 학습자들의 활동이 어떠한 특성을 나타내는지 밝혀 온라인 PBL에서의 학습자 활동에 대한 안내를 제시하고자 한다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 면대면 환경을 기준으로 제안된 학습자의 활동에 대한 안내들을 종합․분석하여 학습자 활동을 분석할 수 있는 메시지 분석틀을 마련하고, 이 분석틀을 기준으로 온라인 PBL로 이루어진 강좌의 학습자 메시지를 분석하였다. 연구결과, 온라인 PBL에서의 학습자들은 문제해결 활동을 위해 필요한 팀원들 간의 친밀감 형성과 허용적 분위기 형성 등의 바람직한 관계형성과 팀 운영을 위한 활동들은 활발하게 잘 수행하였지만, 문제해결을 위해 PBL에서 요구하는 각 과정을 충실하게 지키지는 않았다. 특히, 문제가 제시된 이후 학습자들의 경험과 지식에 근거하여 문제해결을 위한 의견과 사실을 제시해야 하는 부분이 잘 이루어지지 않았다. 따라서 온라인 PBL을 실행할 때는 기존의 면대면 환경에서의 PBL 과정을 그대로 실천하기 보다는 이러한 특성이 나타날 수 있는 온라인 환경의 특성, 제한점 등을 잘 분석하여 새로운 실천전략을 마련하는 것이 필요하며, 라인 환경의 특성, 제한점 등을 잘 분석하여 새로운 실천전략을 마련하는 것이 필요하며, 학습자들이 PBL 과정을 충실히 경험할 수 있도록 안내하는 튜터의 역할이 강조되어야 할 것이다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how learners act in online Problem Based Learning(PBL) environment. A case study was performed to investigate messages of learners. The case for this study was a graduated course which was implemented in online PBL. To identify characteristics of learners' activities, a content analysis was conducted with the messages that learners posted on the web bulletin board utilized for the case course. The framework of the message analysis was based on Barrows' two books: "What Your Tutor May Never Tell You" and "The Tutorial Process". The framework consists of three main groups and eighteen subgroups of categories; 1) Building up relationships: self-introduction, gossip, and support, 2) Managing a team: news, ideas, support, question and answer, and assignment, 3) Solving problems: ideas, facts, agreement, support, materials(data), critical ideas, summary, and decision. The results of the study demonstrate as follows; 1) Learners performed their tasks for building up relationships and managing their team. 2) But, learners did not fully experience PBL process of which Barrows had emphasized the importance. Based on the results, it is suggested that we consider Blended PBL, which combines online and offline PBL in order to make up for the identified deficits of current online PBL in regards to learner experience. Also, the role of tutor as process guide with minute attention needs to be emphasized.
