문제기반학습(PBL)에서는 교수자가 학습과정을 안내하는 튜터의 역할을 수행해야 한다. PBL에서 튜터란 가장 보편적으로 “소집단 학습과 자율학습이 원활하게 이루어지도록 촉진하는 사람”으로 정의된다. 튜터의 역할을 수행하는데 있어서 가장 핵심이 되는 것은 ‘적절한 때(timing)'에 적절한 역할을 수행해야 한다는 것이다. 선행연구들은 이 적절한 때를 위해 튜터 역할을 제시하였다. 그런데, 이러한 지침은 웹기반 PBL에서의 튜터 활동에 대한 직접적인 도움을 제공하는데 한계를 갖는다. 튜터가 학습자들의 문제해결과정을 지켜볼 수 있는 면대면 PBL과는 달리 웹기반 PBL에서는 학습자들의 문제해결과정이 비동시적․동시적으로 웹에서 이루어지기 때문이다. 웹기반 PBL에서는 튜터가 메시지작성을 통해 학습자들의 학습을 도와야 한다. 따라서, 어떠한 내용의 메시지를 어느 시점에서 작성하여 학습자들에게 제시해야 하는지에 대한 안내가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 웹기반 PBL로 진행된 강좌의 튜터 활동이 어떤 특성을 나타내는지 밝혀 웹기반 PBL에서의 튜터 활동에 대한 안내를 제시하고자 하였다. 본 연구에서는 면대면 환경을 기준으로 제안된 PBL 튜터의 역할에 대한 안내들을 종합․분석하여 튜터 역할에 대한 메시지분석틀을 마련하여 이 분석틀을 기준으로 웹기반 PBL로 이루어진 한 강좌의 튜터 메시지를 분석하였다. 연구결과, 한 학기 동안 이루어진 강좌에서의 튜터 메시지는 과정관련 안내 메시지와 내용관련 안내 메시지가 각각 다른 패턴으로 제시되었으며, 각 메시지의 하위 유형별로도 다양한 특성을 나타냈다. 본 연구는 웹기반 PBL에서의 튜터가 그 역할을 수행하는 것을 시각화․유형화시킴으로써 이후 웹기반 PBL에서의 튜터 활동 및 유사한 특성을 지닌 웹기반 학습자 중심 학습환경에서의 튜터 활동에 대한 안내자의 역할을 할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate how the tutor plays roles in web based Problem Based Learning. The research question of this study was "How does the tutor play roles in web based PBL?" A qualitative case study was performed to investigate messages of a tutor to answer the question. The case being studied was a graduated course which was mainly implemented as a type of web based PBL. To seize characteristics of tutor's playing roles, a content analysis was performed on the messages that the tutor posted on an web bulletin board. The frame of analysis was based on Barrows' writings: “THE TUTORIAL PROCESS”. It had two main groups and nine subgroups: ① Guides of processes: encouragement․praise, familiarity, participation prompt, course management, PBL process guide, ② Guides of Contents: learning resource presentation, question, debriefing, and feedback & evaluation. The results of the study demonstrate as follows: 1) The tutor played roles as process guide than content guide. In special, She wrote messages with intent to cheer learners. 2) The tutor showed diverse messages according to each phase of web based PBL in order to give students timely interventions and help. 3) According to the repetition on PBL processes, the tutor's activities were changed by learners' maturity on PBL processes. In the early stage on PBL, the tutor gave her attention to what learners had to experience PBL processes. After the middle stage, the tutor's interventions were decreased. In web based PBL, the tutor must monitor in particular the process of each student's learning so that timely interventions and help.
