Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore how the course evaluation scores were related to the instructor characteristics in 3 areas: personal, instructional design, teaching activities. Data were collected and statistically analyzed from the course evaluation results with 10 independent variables of the three instructor characteristics from 515 online courses in an online university. The analyses showed three important findings. First, the subjects showed distinct differences in all three characteristics depending on their status(full-time or non full-time). The full-time instructors more tended to apply the nature of online education to their courses than the non full-time ones. Second, the full-time instructors showed much variance in the course evaluation scores depending on their instructional design, while the non full- time instructors' scores were related to their teaching activities. Third, the instructor characteristics affecting the course evaluation scores were varied depending on the status: full-time (number of students, score ratios of two official exams and interactions), non full-time(online course experiences, Q&A interval, number of instructor's official notices, and number of instructor's responses). These results meant that the course evaluation scores of full-time and non full-time instructors were explained by wholly different variables. This study was meaningful in that it utilized large samples to check the online instructor characteristics, revealed the relationships between instructional effectiveness and the characteristics, and proposed a few practical suggestions for the professional development for online instructors.
