Abstract

As the PB market has continued to grow quantitatively as well as qualitatively, this study is conducted to investigate the effects of the antecedents (manufacturer’s marketing capabilities, dependence on retailer, and competitive intensity) of manufacturers’ specific investment to PB production and consequences (sales performance, relationship performance, and product cannibalization) of this investment within manufacturer-retailer PB transaction relation. The results of this study show that the marketing capability of manufacturer does not significantly affect the manufacturer’s specific investment to PB production. On the other hand, the dependence on retailer and competitive intensity in the industry are found to affect the manufacturer’s specific investment to PB production. As the consequences of the manufacturer’s specific investment to PB production, the manufacturer’s specific investment affects the relationship performance and product cannibalization, but it does not affect the sales performance. This paper suggest that manufacturers’ specific investment to PB production can be explained by the power-dependence perspective and the S-C-P paradigm rather than the resource dependency perspective. And this paper also suggest that the consequences of the specific investment can be explained by transaction cost economics and relational exchange theory.
