Abstract

This paper aims to investigate how university students' online peer feedback affects the learning outcomes in a Blended e-Learning environment. At the initial stage of the research, learners' online interaction was categorized into a cognitive type such as critical corrective feedback and an affective type such as complimentary, and these different types of interaction were conducted in each group. Critical corrective feedback was main interaction in one group and complimentary was major interaction in another group, while free interaction was allowed in the third controlled group. Student achievement, satisfaction, and perceived learning outcome in each group were analyzed. As a result, students in the complimentary feedback group had a tendency to perceive that their feedback was more helpful to learning throughout the semester than students in the critical feedback group or the free feedback group did. Meanwhile, the complimentary feedback group showed better satisfaction than the others until mid-term, but showed no significant difference after mid-term. And there was no significant difference among the groups in regard of student achievement. However, a possibility was found that feedback type may influence on student achievement, depending on learning readiness and subject characteristics. The results of the research suggest that complimentary feedback plays a role as significantly as cognitive feedback does, especially for lower achievers.
