Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to identify the online learning strategies of university students by analyzing latent groups. Additionally, we aim to understand the characteristics of learners by analyzing the differences in multitasking behavior in online learning strategies latent groups. We conducted a questionnaire survey among 702 students at a A university in Korea. Latent profile analysis was conducted, and the main findings are as follows: First, this study divided students' online learning strategies into four latent group based on their characteristics: 1) low learning strategy group, 2) time and effort management focused group, 3) simple cognitive strategy foucsed group, and 4) high learning strategy group. The results showed that the 'communication with others' strategy was low among all groups. Second, students participating in online education engaged in multitasking behavior the most when it came to sending texts, followed by real-time messages with friends on KakaoTalk. Third, significant differences were found among latent groups in all types of multitasking behaviors, except for listening to music. Additionally, this study discovered that higher levels of learning strategy are associated with lower levels of multitasking behavior. Therefore, it is recommended to develop an online learning environment that can monitor students' learning strategies, implement teaching and learning interventions that promote communication strategies, and encourage productive multitasking behaviors in online courses.
