Abstract

This study investigates relationships between learning emotions and off task behaviors in asynchronous, video based online learning and proposes directions for emotion sensitive instructional design. Focusing on negative emotions-boredom, confusion, and frustration-it examines how these states shape off task activity. Using a quasi experimental design with adult learners (N = 30), the analysis identified significant associations between specific emotions and particular off task behaviors. Learners also enacted diverse off task behaviors as self regulatory strategies to manage negative emotions and sustain engagement. These behaviors were organized into four higher order categories (non participatory movements, participatory movements, physiological processes, and gaze diversion) and six mid level categories (looking at a specific target, using devices, satisfying physiological needs, touching the body, moving the body, and verbalization). Drawing on observation based analyses and interviews, the study further distinguished four functional types-transition, abandonment, expressive, and resultant-which informed guidelines for regulating and intervening in off task behavior. Overall, off task behavior is not inherently detrimental; the need for external intervention should be judged contextually, with feedback and management applied strategically and flexibly according to learners’ emotional states.
