Abstract

This study examined the educational effectiveness of a behavior-based monitoring program in online video lectures, analyzed how two behavioral indicators(screen departure and gaze disengagement) affect achievement, and explored learners' perceptions of the program. A monitoring program with face and eye recognition and real-time alerts was developed. 61 university students were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups, with the program applied only to the experimental group. Pre- and post-tests assessed group differences, behavioral logs were analyzed using Spearman correlation and LOWESS nonlinear analysis, and learner perceptions were surveyed with a 5-point Likert scale. The experimental group achieved significantly higher post-test scores than the control group. Screen departure caused immediate achievement decline even with few occurrences and intensified with accumulation, while gaze disengagement showed gradual decline followed by stabilization. A positive correlation between indicators confirmed that visual disengagement and spatial departure interact to worsen behavioral engagement. Learners positively evaluated the program for concentration maintenance and learning management support but perceived limited improvement in instructional quality. This study demonstrated that behavior-based monitoring can support sustained engagement and achievement without undermining learner autonomy, suggesting the need for differentiated intervention strategies for each behavioral indicator.
