Abstract
This study presents a contrastive analysis of the evidentiality of the Spanish visual perception verbs ver, mirar, and parecer and the Korean visual perception verbs 보다 and 보이다, based on 21st-century spoken Spanish data. The verb ver can take an experiencer subject, which enables intellectual acts such as inference, judgment, and prediction, and allows for the expression of indirect knowledge, whereas mirar can only take an agent subject and thus conveys only direct knowledge. The verb parecer can be used to indicate indirect knowledge derived from inference as well as reports from others. To ensure the objectivity of a proposition and enhance its reliability, ver employs the impersonal se and the adverb ya, while mirar uses the imperative mood to elicit the hearer’s agreement and consent, as well as to draw their attention. Parecer can omit the experiencer subject, thereby establishing a distance between the speaker and the proposition and leaving room for the hearer to express their opinion. In Korean, 보다 produces the same effect as parecer by using the passive form and omitting the experiencer subject. This study interprets ver and mirar as verbs that operate within distinct evidential domains. By contrasting the evidential domains of Spanish visual perception verbs with their Korean counterparts, the study demonstrates that evidentiality can serve as a key criterion for accurate mutual translation between the two languages.
