Abstract

Recently, as many local cities in Korea are experiencing a population decline, social and academic interest in compact spatial structures is increasing. The main purpose of this study is to establish an analysis method based on accessibility to urban services to investigate compactness of spatial structures, and apply it to Korean case cities to identify its implications. To this end, this study first defined urban compactness in terms of the degree to which people and jobs are concentrated around central places providing diverse services that are the nodes of residents’ lives, and developed an index that can reflect this. Next, the proposed measurement index was applied to cities in Gyeongsangbuk-do, a case region, to measure their compactness, and the results were compared between cities to analyze their characteristics. Additionally, in order to examine the characteristics of the proposed method, the implications were analyzed by comparing it with the results of methods commonly used in urban compactness analysis. The compactness analysis method proposed in this study was found to be able to capture a new perspective different from existing indices by explicitly considering spatial structure, and is expected to be useful in compact city planning.
