본 논문의 목적은 아우구스티누스의 『입문자 교육론』에 나타난 교사 성품론을 탐색함으로써 가르침과 배움에서교사의 역할을 숙고하고, 아우구스티누스 교사 성품론의 교육적 함의를 드러내는 데 있다. 아우구스티누스는 『그리스도교 교양』에서 고대 수사학을 교육 수사학으로 전환하면서 교사의 윤리적 성품을 중요한 요소로 논의한다. 그렇다면아우구스티누스의 교육론에서 교사의 성품은 윤리적 성품으로 환원되는 것인가? 본 논문은 이러한 의문에 답하기위해 『그리스도교 교양』과 함께 아우구스티누스의 교육 수사학을 구성하는 『입문자 교육론』을 탐구하고자 한다. 아우구스티누스는 『입문자 교육론』에서 고대 수사학자들이 주목하지 않았던 기쁨을 가르치는 자의 성품으로 제시한다는 점에서 독창성을 드러낸다. 더욱이 그는 교사의 성품이 학생과의 상호관계에서 형성된다고 주장함으로써 독창성을강화한다. 이로써 그는 교사의 윤리적 성품만을 제시하는 『그리스도교 교양』보다 풍성한 교사 성품론을 전개할수 있었다. 『입문자 교육론』은 교사의 기쁨이나 교사와 학생의 사랑에 무관심한 현대 교육체계에 반성을 일으킨다. 가르치는 행위는 기쁜 일이며, 교사의 기쁨은 학생에게 전달되어 최선의 학습효과를 이끌어낼 수 있다는 아우구스티누스의 관점은 현대의 교육적 문제에 해답의 토대를 제공할 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the role of teachers in teaching and learning by exploring the theory of teacher character shown in Augustine's De Catechizandis Rudibus, and to reveal the educational implications of Augustine's theory of teacher character. Augustine discusses the speaker, or the ethical character of a teacher, as an important factor in De Doctrina Christiana because it transforms ancient rhetoric into educational rhetoric. So in Augustine's theory of education, is the nature of a teacher returned to ethical character? In order to answer these questions, this paper explores De Catechizandis Rudibus, which constitutes Augustine's educational rhetoric, along with De Doctrina Christiana. Augustinus reveals originality in the book De Catechizandis Rudibus in that it presents joy that ancient rhetoricians did not pay attention to. Moreover, he strengthens originality by asserting that a teacher's character is formed in interrelationships with students. As a result, he was able to develop a richer theory of teachers' personality than De Doctrina Christiana, which only presents the ethical qualities of teachers. De Catechizandis Rudibus reflects on the modern educational system, which is indifferent to the joy of teachers or the love of teachers and students. Augustine's view that teaching is a pleasure, and the joy of teaching can be conveyed to students and bring out the best learning effect will provide the basis for the answer to modern educational problems.
