Abstract
De catechizandis rudibus is the letters of Augustine and Deogratias. Deogratias wanted to obtain advice from Augustine to seek the effective method in educating catechism. In response to this inquiry, Augustine informed Deogratias about the method of catechism which covered from fundamental to practical issues. The love of Jesus stood in the core of the fundamental issue, whereas joy was the main theme for the practical issue. The joy Augustine described is based on the words of St. Paul, “God loves a cheerful giver.”(II Co. 9,7). The questions such as "What kind of joy is this?" or "What is this joy for?" are used to reveal the joy Augustine had in mind. The joy, in his definition, is everlasting and spiritual. In other words, eternity and spirituality both act as a measure to decide what belongs to joy. This measure reveals that the terms in his work such as 'a smiling face' or 'a sweet words' express joy and at the same time coincide with ministerial joy. In conclusion, the principal of education found in De catechizandis rudibus is 'Jesus-love'. In the advice from Augustine, it is found that this principal operates with two different paths to joy - the real experience of evolving from 'sweet pleasure' to 'spiritual joy' and the tension formed in the hope of achieving eternal joy through developing from 'joy of human being' to 'eternal joy'.
