Abstract
Jeong, I.G., Yoon, J.H., Lee, H.H., Kim, C.J. Effects of treadmill exercise on hippocampal cell proliferation and memory in streptozotocin rat model for sporadic Alzheimer's disease. Exercise Science, 16(1): 11-22, 2007. In the present study, we examined the effects of treadmill exercise on memory ability and cell proliferation in the dentate gyrus in rat model for sporadic Alzheimer's disease. For the induction of sporadic Alzeimer's type dementia, adult male rats were injected with intracerebroventricular (ICV) streptozotocin (STZ) bilaterally. Rats in the exercise group were forced to run on a treadmill for 30 min daily for 14 days. The memory function was assessed using a passive avoidance task and elevated plus maze task, respectively. Cell proliferation was assessed by the 5-bromo- 2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) immunohistochemistry. In the present study, ICV STZ-injected rats showed impaired memory function, and treadmill exercise in ICV STZ-injected rats alleviated the impairment of learning and memory. We also demonstrated that the number of proliferating cells in the dentate gyrus was markedly decreased in ICV STZ-injected rats. However, treadmill exercise significantly enhanced cell proliferation in the dentate gyrus of ICV- STZ-injected rats. The present results suggest that treadmill exercise may be useful in the alleviation of memory dysfunction in ICV STZ-injected rats.
