Abstract

Park, S.H., Han, T.K., Lee, S.H., Kang, Y.C., Kang, H.S. Effects of two different intensities of a 12 week-walking program on body composition, abdominal fat, and cardiorespiratory fitness in obese Women. Exercise Science, 16(1): 1-10, 2007. The purpose of thus study was to investigate the effects of two isoenergetic walking programs, one of low intensity and the other of high intensity, on body composition, abdominal subcutaneous and visceral fats, and cardiorespiratory(CR) fitness in abdominally, obese women. A total of 30 women who met waist circumference of ≥80 cm voluntarily participated in the study, and they were further classified as either low-intensity group (n=15, 43.4±5.9yrs, 50% VO2max) or high-intensity group(n=15, 43.6±4.3yrs, 80% VO2max) Anthropometric variables (i..e., body mass index, waist circumference, percent body fat, waist-to- hip ratio), computerized tomography(CT)-measured abdominal subcutaneous and visceral fats, and CR fitness were measured three times, first at the beginning, second at the 6th week, and third following the 12 weeks. The within group analyses, showed that both walking programs of different intensities were effective in reducing body weight(p=0.007), waist circumference(p<0.001), waist-to-hip ratio(p<0.001), CR fitness (p=0.0.028), and abdominal subcutaneous(p<0.001). Of particular, the between-group analyses showed that the high-intensity walking group had significantly greater improvements in body mass index (p=0.044), percent body fat(p=0.021), and total abdominal area(p=0.022) and subcutaneous fats(p<0.001) than the low-intensity group. In conclusion, the current findings of this study indicate that a high-intensity working program may have a greater efficacy as a means to treat abdominal obesity in mid-life women than a low-intensity working program.* 이 논문은 2005년 정부(교육인적자원부)의 재원으로 한국학술진흥재단의 지원을 받아 수행된 연구임“(KRF-2005-042-G00025)
