Abstract
So, W. Y., & Choi, D. H. Effects of walking and resistance training on the body composition, cardiorespiratory function, physical fitness and blood profiles of middle-aged obese women. Exercise Science, 16(2): 85-94, 2007. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of 8-week walking and resistance training based on the same energy expenditure(HRmax 70-80%) and elucidate which training type has more beneficial effects for obese women. Forty-two obese women participated in this study and divided into aerobic exercise (AE: n=14), resistance exercise (RE: n=14) and control group (Con: n=14). We measured body composition; body weight, BMI and %fat, cardiorespiratory function; SBP, DBP, resting HR, vital capacity and FEV₁, physical fitness; cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, power, agility and balance, and blood profiles; blood glucose, total cholesterol and triglyceride. On the basis of these results, exercise effects of each training type are as follows: At the end of training, body weight, BMI and %fat were significantly improved in all training groups. In AE group, SBP, DBP, resting HR, VO₂max, and total cholesterol were significantly changed. In RE group, muscular strength and blood glucose were significantly changed. It is suggested that both walking and resistance training have a beneficial effects on exercise-induced improvement in respiratory function and blood profiles. Furthermore, these result shown that in contrast to resistance training, walking exercise has a positive effect on blood pressure, resting HR, VO₂max and total cholesterol.
