Abstract
The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of walking/jogging exercise training intensity on abdominal fat losses in obese women. A total of 46 middle-aged women (control group, n=20 and exercise training group, n=26), who met the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criterion for abdominal obesity with waist circumference(WC) of >80 cm, were invited to participate in the study. The exercise groups were further divided into either Moderate- intensity (n=12; VO2max 50%) or high-intensity group (n=14; VO2max 80%), and they underwent a supervised walking/jogging program, which was designed to illicit energy expenditure of 400 kcal per session regardless of exercise intensity, with a frequence of 3 days per week for 12 weeks. Subjects were asked to wear the Kenz Lifecorder EX accelerometer for the objective measurement of physical activity during the entire period of the experiment. Computerized tomography (CT) was used to quantify subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAAT) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) both at before and after the walking program. WC, weight, BMI, percent body fat, and cardio/respiratory fitness were measured at the baseline, at the mid-point, and after the walking program. Two-way Mixed ANOVA showed that as compared to the control group, both the low- and high-intensity groups had significant reductions in SAAT, with no significant differences between the two exercise groups. A significant time effect only (p=.001) was found in changes in VAT, indicating that VAT was significantly reduced in all the groups following the walking/jogging program. Significant time by group interactions were found for WC (p=.001), weight (p=.001), BMI (p=.001), and percent body fat (p=.001). As compared to the control group, both the Moderate- and high-intensity groups had significant reductions in those body fatness variables, with no significant differences between the two exercise groups. In conclusion, the findings of the current study indicate that exercise training intensity would be not a critical factor in determining exercise training-induced abdominal fat losses in obese women
