대학생 공감능력 향상을 위한 공감교육 연구 - 이화여대 '호모 엠파티쿠스: 소통, 공감, 신뢰' 교과목 사례를 중심으로 -

본 논문은 공감이 필요한 시대가 되고 있으나 무한경쟁 속에서 대학생들은 점점 더 타인과 공감하기 어려운 역설적 상황에 있다고 보고, ‘공감의 시대’를 위한 대학의 역할과 대학생 공감교육의 방법을 모색하였다. 신자유주의 시대에 타인에 대한 관심과 존중은 줄어들고 개인은 고립되어가는 데 비해, 공동체 사회를 위한 대학의 사회적 책임이 부족하다는 인식에서 대학생 공감교육이 필요하다고 보았다. 공감교육에서 고려해야 하는 주요 요소(감정, 자기이해, 공감적 소통, 상상력)를 바탕으로 교과목을 개발하고, 이화여대 <호모 엠파티쿠스: 소통, 공감, 신뢰> 교과목 사례 연구를 통해 대학생 공감교육의 방법과 의미를 탐색하였다. 사례 연구결과, 공감능력은 자신과 타인에 대한 이해와 관심을 높이고, 단절된 개인의 삶을 보다 풍요롭게 할 뿐 아니라 사회적 문제 해결능력과 시민성을 향상시키는 중요한 요소임을 알 수 있었다. 공감을 제한하는 사회 구조 속에서 교과목 하나로 공감능력이 갑자기 향상되거나 사회를 변화시킬 수는 없지만, 본 연구에서는 대학생 공감능력의 향상 과정을 고찰함으로써 공감교육의 가능성을 확인할 수 있었으며 이를 통해 대학생 공감교육에 대한 사회적 관심과 노력이 확대될 수있기를 기대한다.
Abstract
This paper assumes that university students are in a paradoxical situation where it becomes increasingly difficult to understand and empathize with others in a competitive society, and aims to find ways to improve the role of universities and empathy ability of university students for the age of empathy. In recognition of the lack of university's efforts and research on teaching methods for empathy education, we suggested the necessity of empathy education and the five main factors to be considered in empathy education (emotion, self-esteem, communication, imagination) and examined the case of a basic liberal arts course. With the focus on the case of the Ehwa Womans University course <Homo emphathicus: Communication, empathy, and trust>, we sought the ways and possibilities of empathy education that is oriented toward the theory and practice, and examined how the empathy ability of university students can be improved through classes. It could be found that empathy ability is an important factor not only for enhancing understanding and interest of oneself and others, enriching the ruptured personal life, but also for improving social-problem-solving ability and citizenship. Although this study has a limitation in that it focuses on the case of a specific course, it was expected that the interest in the empathy education of university students would be expanded by examining the process of how empathy ability is formed through empathy education.
