한국과 일본의 중등학교 영어 교과서 비교 연구

이 연구는 한국과 일본의 영어교육이 지향하는 목표가 교과서에 어떻게 반영되어 있으며 그 내용과 구성에 있어서어떠한 공통점과 차이점이 있는지 알아볼 목적으로 수행되었다. 두 국가의 중․고등학교 교과서 8권을 대상으로 구성체계, 학습 내용, 난이도에 초점을 두고 분석한 결과 다음과 같은 차이점들을 발견할 수 있었다. 첫째, 한국은 기술통합형 활동을 통해 듣기, 말하기, 읽기, 쓰기를 균형 있게 다루고 있는 반면 일본은 읽기와 문법에 상대적으로 더큰 비중을 두고 있었다. 둘째, 한국은 학생들이 되도록 다양한 의사소통 기능들을 연습할 수 있도록 단원마다 각기다른 기능들을 제시한데 반해 일본은 일부 기능들을 집중적이고 반복적으로 다루고 있었다. 셋째, 문법 교육에 있어서는한국의 경우 모국어나 어학 용어를 사용하지 않고 목표 문법이 포함된 예문만을 제시하고 있었으나 일본은 모국어를적극적으로 활용하여 목표 문법을 자세히 설명하는 방식을 취하고 있었다. 넷째, 난이도 측면에서 보았을 때 한국의중학교 교과서는 일본에 비해 2학년 정도 더 어려운 수준이었고, 고등학교 교과서는 3학년 정도 더 어려운 수준이었다. 이상의 결과를 바탕으로 제언하자면 한국의 교과서는 획일적인 구성에서 벗어나 단원마다 조금씩 변화를 주고 학교급간 학습량과 난이도를 보다 정교하게 조절할 필요가 있으며, 일본은 읽기와 문법 중심의 문법번역식 접근에서 탈피하여유의미한 의사소통 활동을 충분히 제공하고 언어의 4기능을 좀 더 균형 있게 다룰 필요가 있다.
Abstract
This study compares the middle and high school English textbooks in Korea and Japan with special regards to content organization, learning objectives, and text readability. The analysis was conducted with 8 textbooks that are most widely used in the two countries. Main findings are as follows: The English textbooks in Korea (KETs) consist of the same format and number of pages in all lesson units whereas those in Japan (JETs) contain varying formats and contents that differ from one unit to another. KETs exhibit a uniform structure in the sequence of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with at least two of the four skills integrated in each classroom activity. JETs, on the other hand, do not have a fixed sequence and rarely integrate different skills, putting relatively more emphasis on reading and grammar. KETs present grammatical forms without any explicit explanation and metalinguistic terms, but JETs provide a linguistic explanation and use Japanese extensively. Finally, the readability of KETs is substantially higher than that of JETs in the corresponding school year.
