청소년의 사회경제적 배경이 봉사활동에 미치는 영향과 학생 봉사활동의 실효성

초록

학생 봉사활동 제도는 청소년의 올바른 인성과 사회성 함양을 위해 도입되었으나 최근 이 제도의 공정성과 실효성에대한 의문이 제기되고 있다. 이러한 의문에 대한 실마리를 제공하고자 본 연구는 청소년의 사회경제적 배경(부모소득, 부모 학력)이 봉사활동 참여 여부 및 참여 동기(미참여, 진학 동기, 진학 외 동기)에 미치는 영향 그리고 봉사활동참여 여부 및 참여 동기가 청소년의 사회적 인식 및 태도(긍정적 지역사회 인식, 공동체의식, 이타적 목표의식) 발달에미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 이를 위해 한국청소년정책연구원의 한국아동‧청소년패널조사 2010의 초등학교 4학년 패널의4차시(중학교 1학년), 6차시(중학교 3학년), 7차시(고등학교 1학년) 자료를 분석하였다. 다항 로지스틱 회귀분석 결과, 부모의 소득은 진학 동기로 인한 참여와 긍정적 관계가 있었고 부모의 학력은 진학 외 동기로 인한 참여와 긍정적관련성이 있었다. 잠재성장곡선모형 분석결과, 봉사활동에 참여하지 않은 집단과 진학 동기로 참여한 집단은 긍정적지역사회 인식과 이타적 목표의식에서 유의한 차이가 없었지만 공동체의식은 진학 동기로 참여한 집단이 더 높았다. 진학 외 동기로 봉사활동에 참여한 학생은 진학 동기로 봉사활동에 참여한 학생보다 더 긍정적인 지역사회 인식, 더 강한 공동체의식, 더 높은 수준의 이타적 목표의식을 보였다.

Abstract

Student service learning was introduced to a school curriculum in order for adolescents to develop positive personal and social characteristics. Recently, however, there have been controversies on the fairness and effectiveness of student service learning. To find clues regarding these controversies, this study examined the influence of socioeconomic background (family income and parental educational attainment) on volunteering motivations (no volunteering, a volunteering for university admission, and a volunteering for other reasons) among adolescents and the effect of adolescents’ volunteering experience on their positive community perception, sense of community, and altruistic attitude, drawing on data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2010. Multiple logistic regressions revealed that family income was positively associated with a volunteering for university admission. Parental educational attainment was positively related to adolescents’ volunteering for other reasons. Latent growth curve modeling found no significant differences in a positive community perception and an altruistic attitude between the “no volunteering” group and the “volunteering for university admission” group. However, the “volunteering for university admission” group showed a higher level of a sense of community than the “no volunteering” group. When the “volunteering for university admission” group was compared to the “volunteering for other reasons” group, the “volunteering for other reasons” group showed a higher level of a positive community perception, a sense of community, and an altruistic attitude than the “volunteering for university admission” group.
