Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the predictive factor of undergraduates’ self-exploration and life satisfaction, which represent their adaptive lives. For this, this study examined the relationship between expectancy, value, cost perception, effort regulation, self-exploration and life satisfaction among undergraduates who take liberal arts course. In particular, mediating effects of effort regulation were tested between expectancy-value-cost perception and self-exploration, and life satisfaction using structural equation modeling. To this end, we measured undergraduates’ expectancy-value-cost perceptions of liberal arts courses at the beginning of the semester, and measured the remaining variables at the end of the semester. When we analyzed the responses of 492 undergraduates, their expectancy for success in a liberal arts course in the early semester positively predicted self-exploration. Unlike expectancy, undergraduates’ value perception in the liberal arts course positively predicted life satisfaction only via effort regulation. Meanwhile, cost perception did not predict any outcome. Based on the results, the implications of liberal arts courses for undergraduates’ self-exploration and life satisfaction are discussed.
