Abstract
The purpose of this research is to demonstrate the positive effects of neurofeedback with muscle training on serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), performance skill, and attention level in middle school sabre beginner fencers. Twenty one subjects were assigned to three groups: neurofeedback with muscle training group (NMG, n=7), self-controlled feedback with muscle training group (SMG, n=7) and muscle training only group (MTG, n=7) for 12 weeks' training. Basic strength components (power, flexibility, agility), serum BDNF and attention level were analysed before and after training session. Performance skill and performance posture scores were analysed after training session. After 12 weeks of training sessions, basic strength components and serum BDNF level in all groups were increased significantly from pre training values (p<.001), but showed no differences among groups. Fencing performance time was significantly faster and fencing performance posture scores were significantly higher in the NMG compared to the other groups (p<.001). Attention level increased significantly only in NMG (p<.05). Attention level showed a significant correlation with fencing performance time (r=-.492) and posture scores (r=.739). These results suggest that neurofeedback with muscle training is effective for enhancing performance skill and attention level in middle school sabre beginner fencers.
