PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to establish the effect of combined exercise on muscle-bone crosstalk factors, which co-regulatory muscle and bone metabolic interaction. METHODS: The subjects were 24 female college students and divided into two groups; non-exercise group (Con, n=12) and combined exercise group (Ex, n=12) by random sampling. This study evaluated changes in bone mineral density (BMD), muscle mass, muscle strength, physical fitness index, and muscle-bone crosstalk factors by a randomized controlled trial. RESULTS: There was no interaction effect between group and time on total body BMD and muscle mass. Combined exercise led to a significant increase of pelvis BMD (p<.01), total exercise time at VO2max (p<.01), back muscle strength (p<.05), standing long jump (p<.05), standing vertical jump (p<.05), trunk flexion (p<.05), isokinetic right knee extension strength (p<.05), and serum osteonectin (p<.05). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that although 12 weeks combined exercise did not improve muscle mass, it increases several basal physical fitness with the increase of serum osteonectin concentration. It’s probably indicate that osteonectin is highly sensitive to exercise among muscle-bone crosstalk factors.
