Abstract
This study aims to examine the social and ethical issues surrounding artificial intelligence in education(AIED) and to understand teachers’ perceptions of who are the primary users of AI technology in educational settings. By doing so, the study seeks to derive policy implications for the more ethical use of AI in education. The study identifies the social and ethical issues related to AIED through a literature review and develops survey questions that require respondents to prioritize conflicting values. The online survey was conducted among elementary, middle, and high school teachers in Gyeonggi Province, and descriptive statistics were presented to the collected data. The social and ethical issues of AIED can be broadly categorized as 1) the narrowing or distortion of educational purposes, 2) the infringement of human agency (autonomy), 3) fairness, 4) privacy protection, and 5) uncertain social impacts. As a result of the survey, educators generally tended to choose risk avoidance when it came to educational values, fairness, and safety issues. However, expectations for the efficiency and effectiveness of AIED education are also observed. In some questions, the differences between groups according to gender, school level, teaching experience, and AI education experience were significant. Based on these results, it was suggested that 1) pedagogical reflection on the purpose of AIED 2) public discussion with various stakeholders related to AIED 3) a balanced approach to both potential benefits and risks are needed. This study contributes to expanding the understanding of various social and ethical issues that may arise in the AIED by analyzing not only theory but also the value orientations of actual educators.
