Abstract

The purpose of the study was to verify effects of several types of short bout exercise on physical fitness, obesity related variables, desire to exercise, and drop out rate in middle-aged obese women. 64 middle-aged obese women(47.17±5.11yrs) were randomly assigned to 3 groups: 1)one bout exercise group(n=22); 2)two bouts exercise group(n=22); and 3)three bouts exercise group(n=20). All subjects were asked to visit to exercise 3 times a week and required to consume 200kcal per day. Physical fitness and obesity related variables were measured in the pre-test and post-test of 12-week exercise program. And the questionnaire of desire to exercise was measured at the end of exercise program. In addition to, drop out rates of subjects in each group were observed. VO2max and muscular endurance were significantly(p<.001) higher in post-test than in pre-test but there was no effect of short bout exercise in these variables. Significant effect of exercise in obesity related variables was found(p<.001). But there was non-significant changes of means of some obesity related variables(weight, body mass index, %body fat, and body fat mass) in three short bouts exercise group but effect of interaction between treatment and groups in %body fat and body fat mass was significant(p<.05). Meanwhile 2 types of desire to exercise were significantly higher(p<.001,p<.05) and there was a trend of low drop out rate in three short bouts exercise group than two other groups. It was suggested that although 2~3 bouts exercise programs might be recommended for health and fitness promotion, but 1 longer or 2 short bouts exercise can be prescribed in weight control program for middle-aged women.
