Abstract
The acceleration of social change and the shortening of change cycles have led to the rapid evolution of the core competencies required of university students. In this context, it is crucial to explore the competency needs of university students by academic year. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the differences in core competencies and educational needs across academic years. To achieve this, a survey was conducted among students at S University, and 940 responses were analyzed. One-way ANOVAs were performed to examine the differences in core competencies across academic years, followed by post-hoc analyses for the competencies with significant differences. Educational needs were assessed through paired-sample t-tests, Borich's needs assessment formula, and the Locus for Focus model. First, the analysis revealed significant differences in communication and collaboration, self-management, and major-related professional competencies, with lower-year students exhibiting lower competency levels than upper-year students. Second, all academic years displayed the highest educational need for major-related professional competency. Additionally, self-management competency was in high demand among first- to third-year students, while challenge and innovation competency was particularly emphasized among secondto fourth-year students. Differentiated needs by academic year were also identified. First-year students demonstrated a strong need for global competency, second-year students required communication and collaboration competency, and fourth-year students called for creative problem-solving competency. This study highlights the necessity of academic-year-specific approaches to competency-based learning support and proposes strategies for their effective implementation.
