최근 우리나라 대학교육을 획기적으로 개선해야 한다는 사회적 요구가 커지고 있다. 특히 대학교육과 노동시장의 연계 강화에 대한 사회적 요구가 증대되면서 고등교육 단계에서 개발되어야 하는 핵심능력에 대한 관심이 커지고 있다. 그렇지만 아직까지 국내에서는 대학생의 핵심능력 개발에 영향을 미치는 요인에 대한 실증적 연구가 매우 제한적으로 수행되었다. 이러한 문제의식에서 출발한 본 연구는 대학생의 핵심능력 개발과 이에 영향을 미치는 요인을 분석하였다. 분석자료는 60개 4년제 대학에 재학 중인 5,192명의 학생 설문조사를 통해 수집하였으며, 다층구조 자료를 분석하는데 적합한 위계적 선형모형(HLM)을 활용하였다. 연구결과, 교육과정 변인들, 학생의 학습활동 변인들, 대학의 특성이 대학생의 핵심능력 개발에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 교육과정의 우수성-수업 중 고차적 능력의 강조, 교수의 우수성, 평가의 적절성-과 자원의 우수성이 핵심능력의 개발에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 연구결과를 기초로 대학교육의 개선을 위한 시사점과 후속연구를 위한 제언 등을 논의하였다.
Abstract
With increasing demands for higher education meeting industrial needs, developing a renewed set of competencies of college student has emerged as a important agenda in the field of higher education. Yet, there is a paucity of research explaining what factors relate to developing core competencies and how college affect the development of core competencies of college students, especially in Korea. Using a national sample of 5,192 students attending 60 universities in 2007 and a multi-level modeling approach, this study aims to analyze influences on the perceived development of core competencies of college students, focusing on analytic thinking skills, problem-solving skills, communication skills, and collaborative working skills. Findings from this study indicate that the perceived development of core competencies of college students are influenced by such student characteristics as gender, academic majors, students efforts to learn, and variables reflecting quality of educational process. This study also finds that institutional difference does explain part of the variance in the perceived development of core competencies of college students after controlling for the effects of student characteristics, though individual level characteristics account for much of the variance in the perceived development of core competencies of college students.
