Abstract
This study analyzes learners’ perceptions of placement and instructional methods in level-based English courses, as well as the factors influencing their satisfaction. To this end, a survey was conducted with 378 freshmen at a private university in Busan, and the collected data were analyzed using the Jamovi 2.3.28 statistical software. Most students reported that their assigned level was appropriate to their actual English proficiency and expressed satisfaction with both the placement test and the grouping procedure. High levels of satisfaction were also observed with regard to instructors, teaching methods, learning activities, course materials, and the perceived necessity of level-based courses. Cross-tabulation and one-way ANOVA results showed that, among the three levels, students in the advanced group had the most positive perceptions of placement, instruction, and necessity. Furthermore, the regression analysis indicated that satisfaction with class activities and assignments was the strongest predictor of overall course satisfaction. These findings suggest that university students generally recognize the validity and necessity of level-based English instruction. They also provide empirical evidence for the importance of considering placement testing and differentiated grouping in the design and operation of general English programs at the university level.
