Abstract

This study aims to explore the concept of teacher responsibility from the perspective of parents of elementary school students and to identify the content and structure of teacher responsibility as perceived by parents. To this end, in-depth individual interviews were conducted with ten parents, and qualitative analysis was employed to derive key categories of parental expectations and perceptions. The findings revealed five major dimensions of teacher responsibility. First, emotional care and support for student development refers to the teacher’s role in ensuring students’ emotional stability and fostering their socio-emotional growth. Second, responsibility as an instructor involves delivering core academic content, ensuring basic academic proficiency, and promoting engaging, student-centered learning experiences. Third, communication and collaboration with parents emphasizes the teacher’s ability to build trust-based relationships with parents and share detailed, meaningful information about students. Fourth, ethical integrity and fairness reflects the expectation that teachers treat all students equally and act as morally upright role models. Fifth, self-management and prevention of burnout highlights the need for teachers to maintain emotional stability and well-being to sustain high-quality educational practices. This study conceptualizes parental expectations as concrete and actionable dimensions of teacher responsibility, while also revealing the inherent tensions and dilemmas in teacher–parent relationships. These findings offer practical implications for teacher education, policy development, and the establishment of effective school–family partnerships, underscoring the need for institutional support to enhance teacher professionalism and improve working conditions.
