Abstract

This study empirically examined the differential effects of historical empathy instruction on changes in prosocial behavior among sixth-grade students during a field trip to the War Memorial of Korea. A total of 150 students from D Elementary Schoolin Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do, were randomly assigned to one of three instructional conditions—cognitive, affective, or cognitive–affective integrated. Analyses were conducted on students who completed both the pre- and post-surveys (n = 72) using a two-way repeated-measures ANOVA to assess changes in overall prosocial behavior and its subtypes (compliant, public, anonymous, dire, emotional, and altruistic). The results indicated that overall prosocial behavior slightly increased in the affective and cognitive –affective groups and slightly declined in the cognitive group; however, the time × group interaction did not reach statistical significance. At the subtype level, anonymous behavior decreased across all groups (p < .05), whereas emotional behavior increased in all groups (p < .05), with no significant between-group differences. Altruistic behavior increased across the groups (p < .001), but the pre–post change was significant only within the affective group (p < .05). These findings suggest that affective empathy instruction may foster altruistic motivation more directly through emotional engagement and exert a stronger immediate influence than cognitive or cognitive–affective approaches in the context of museum-based history education. These results highlight the importance of systematically integrating affective components into instructional designs to enhance the impact of historical empathy on prosocial outcomes.
