Abstract
This study aimed to classify the main characteristics exhibited by learners engaged in social studies inquiry learning according to the degree of cognitive restructuring and the influence of internal and external factors. It also explored the strategies they employ to solve inquiry learning tasks. By applying relevant theoretical frameworks, this study sought to identify how learners respond to structured academic learning experiences, such as social studies inquiry learning, depending on their individual learning types. A case study was conducted with 12 male and female high-school students who participated in social studies inquiry learning. The entire learning process was observed, and in-depth interviews were conducted to examine the content and rationale for their performance at each stage. Based on internal and external factors derived from constructivist learning theory, schema theory, imitation learning theory, and cultural reproduction theory, the participants’ interview data and behavioral observations were analyzed and categorized into learner types. The analysis of the collected data revealed five distinct types—avoidant, isolated, self-directed, conformist, and imitative—based on the degree of cognitive restructuring and the relative influence of internal and external learning factors. Among these, the conformist type was the most prevalent. The findings indicated that learners engaged in social studies inquiry learning responded to unfamiliar experiences and limited understanding of social science methodologies through one of these five types. The predominance of the conformist type suggests that in situations where learners lack sufficient experience and understanding of social science methodologies, they tend to rely heavily on information provided by others and external sources.
