Abstract
This study investigates how music education professors in teacher education programs perceive the purpose of pre-service teacher education, the content and formation of their pedagogical beliefs, and how those beliefs are reflected in practice. Three professors from colleges of education and graduate schools participated, and data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using a qualitative case study approach. The findings indicate that the participants viewed pre-service teacher education as a process of nurturing and supporting student growth rather than simply transmitting knowledge. They saw themselves as mentors who guide, support, and awaken potential. Their pedagogical beliefs were shaped through their teaching experiences and relationships with students, emerging intuitively rather than being explicitly theorized. The professors emphasized the value of music as a means for teaching, highlighting the importance of joy, meaning, and identity in music education. Their core beliefs were supported by various teaching practices—such as integrating performance and theory, designing creative lessons, and fostering reflection—which were structured as peripheral beliefs. This study offers insights into how pedagogical beliefs are formed and enacted in music teacher education and provides implications for improving the quality of pre-service teacher preparation.
